The Burlington City Council begins FY20 budget discussions at a work session on Thursday.

The special work session, the first of several which will be held this month, will see City Manager Jim Ferneau present an overview of the budget which goes into effect in July.

The city faces several challenges as they head into this budget season, including a continued loss of revenue on both hotel/motel and local option sales taxes. Ferneau was on the Burlington Talk Show last week, he some city projects will now have to be funded in new ways.

“We just did a flood wall that was funded off of sales tax growth,” Ferneau said. “Well…we don’t have sales tax growth, we have a decline in sales tax value…that’s a project that right now, instead of having a funding source from the state coming in, we’re going to have to fund that from debt service.”

Police Chief Dennis Kramer will also present his annual budget at Thursday’s meeting, which begins at 5 PM at Burlington City Hall.

Work sessions will continue to be held throughout the month as department heads present their annual budget plans to the council. The budget will be filed in February.
